What are the advantages of organic cotton?

Growing organic cotton uses no toxic products and does not deplete the soil. It also uses less energy and water. The result is cotton that pollutes very little, and is therefore healthier for the planet in the long term.

Organic cotton is grown without pesticides, insecticides or chemicals. Natural compost replaces chemical fertilisers, and neither chlorine nor heavy metals are used in the manufacturing process. Organic cotton uses less water because the cultivation methods used allow the soil to retain moisture better, so less irrigation is required. Organic cotton means 98% less water pollution... And 94% fewer greenhouse gas emissions than conventional cotton.

Softer and more supple, organic cotton fibre is thicker and hypoallergenic.

What are the qualities of cotton?

One of cotton's many qualities is its absorbency. This plant fibre can absorb more than 8.5% of its weight in water. So cotton has the advantage of absorbing perspiration and keeping you drier than a synthetic fibre.

Once woven, cotton remains supple, hard-wearing and easy to care for. What's more, it's hypoallergenic and has good air permeability (so it lets the skin breathe). Cotton garments are therefore both flexible and hard-wearing.

Cotton is thermally active. It retains heat in winter (nearly half the world's textile fibre consumption) and lets perspiration through in summer. It's an ideal, comfortable fabric that doesn't make you sweat.

What is the GOTS label?

To help you make sense of all the different certifications, let's start by reminding you that a ‘natural’ fabric is one made exclusively from animal or plant fibres (cotton, linen, hemp, wool, etc.).

Then, for a fabric to be ‘organic’, the fibre must have been grown without the use of insecticides, pesticides or GMOs. But the entire fabric manufacturing process must also comply with ecological specifications, including dyeing and printing (in particular, the inks used must not contain heavy metals or harmful substances).

The most comprehensive international reference in this field is the GOTS label. This label takes into account environmental and social aspects. GOTS-labelled fabrics guarantee the absence of pesticides, GMOs and chemical treatment of the textile (with heavy metals), as well as compliance with international labour law (child labour in particular).

What does textile traceability mean?

Traceability is a quality management concept whose aim is to trace the history and origin of a material throughout the production chain. It is a tool for social and environmental responsibility, and a transparent way of communicating product data to buyers. The textile industry is moving in this direction because buyers want to buy a product they know the origin of, and to consume more responsibly.

There are two main types of product traceability in the textile industry

• Segregation, the most reliable system, which means that materials are physically separated from non-certified materials at every stage of processing. This guarantees that the product is 100% certified, as is the case with GOTS certification.
• Mass balance, a less reliable system that allows manufacturers to mix certified and non-certified materials, as in the case of BCI cotton certification. Cultivated cotton can be certified right up to the cotton bale, then when it is processed into yarn, the manufacturer is authorised to mix non-certified and certified resources.
